The Fleet Summer Seasonal position will provide temporary assistance to the Fleet department with a variety of projects and tasks as assigned by the Mechanic Foreman.

This position is classified as summer seasonal and will not exceed a period of six (6) months between May and October.  Working generally the same hours as operations personnel 40 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

  • Support the District’s goal of making our customers our #1 advocates.
  • Wash, fuel and transport District vehicles.
  • Assist the Mechanic Foreman and Mechanic in basic mechanical work as needed.
  • Perform janitorial and maintenance duties.
  • Assist Warehouseman and Storekeeper when needed.
  • Must perform duties in an alert and courteous manner.
  • Use good judgment.
  • Understands and follows safety rules.
  • Punctual and regular in attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalency is a minimum requirement.
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited program; preference will be given to students enrolled in a recognized automotive and diesel apprenticeship program, or a recognized automotive or truck mechanic vocational program.
  • Cannot exceed more than four (4) summer seasons.
  • Must maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations

Must have a valid Driver’s license.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have working knowledge in MS Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, climb stairs, bend, reach, uses hands to finger, handle, or feel, and stand for extended periods of time.  Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.  Required to speak and hear clearly when communicating over the telephone and in person.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to indoor and outdoor environments.  Outdoor settings include all types of property and site conditions including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites, and road rights-of-way.  Indoor settings include residential, commercial and industrial sites that can involve cramped spaces, moving machinery, etc.  Individuals may be exposed to hazardous conditions, including but not limited to obstacles, heights, open trenches, highway traffic, electric lines, all types of vegetation, fiberglass insulation, paint fumes, wood preservatives, solvents, oils, and cleaning compounds.   The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
